Social Responsibility - Political Correctness Meets Exclusivity Meets Vanity

The term "social responsibility" appears to be a product of newly emergent affluent societies which arose from humble, pragmatic beginnings.  There can be no doubt then that, in just that one sentence, one knows that this is primarily referring to the Singaporean context. The phrase is synonymous with the attitude, conduct and efforts based upon an obligation towards the betterment of society at large.  It is very well utilized in the infotainment and corporate commercial circles, especially noticeable amongst the bigwigs of those industries.  It is viewed by mega-corporations as a worthy behaviour to adopt in the course of championing all of their causes. While this goes well with the assurance and confidence paid back to the organisations involved, it insidiously gives birth to a sinister mentality among the well-intentioned practitioners. What is mostly unknown of, or worse, disavowed, by the protagonists of "social responsi...

Rainbow Six

Image
Rating: ★★★★ Category: Books Genre: Literature & Fiction Author: Tom Clancy I got this hardback way back during my studies in Scotland, after having been bowled over by the PC game (by the same title) which was based on the novel. Absolutely a must-read for all followers of Tom Clancy and loyal fans of his star characters - Jack Ryan and John Clark, who were also featured in related Tom Clancy-inspired movies "The Hunt for Red October", "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger". In Rainbow Six, John Clark assumes the point-man as head of the elite international covert operations unit that is conferred the unique and politically-sensitive (and explosive) mission authority to strike at terrorists anywhere in the world.

Defending the Lion City

Image
Rating: ★★★★ Category: Books Genre: Reference Author: Tim Huxley Well-documented treatise on the Singapore military by a foreign defence analyst. Among the influential elements that got me into my career. ;] Not entirely,or solely, for military nuts, this book also provides in-depth insights into the prevalent circumstances surrounding the infantile years of the republic, so there is substantial eye-candy and brain-food for history enthusiasts as well.

Donor fatigue and the passion for justice and morality

Recent news events that have in a way rehashed the issues behind their first occurrences in the local scene - indictments of well-known charities and happenings in the entertainment industry that directly or indirectly influence the prospective entrance of the future Integrated Resort (IR) here - the announcement of the folding up of the Crazy Horse cabaret. In the flurry of these goings-on, which may naturally be perceived as continuing sagas in their own right, I recall, with amazement, the height of the moral outrage and social upheaval that such events evoked within the local population at large, only to observe now an apparent sense of lethargy, and a spirit of apathy overtaking the same opponents of injustice and immorality before. It seems to me, the essence behind the term 'donor fatigue', coined to describe the attitude of weariness (lethargy) towards the rendering of compassion (to total strangers), has permeated soci...

Everybody's Normal Till You Get To Know Them

Image
Rating: ★★★★ Category: Books Genre: Religion & Spirituality Author: John Ortberg A light-hearted, yet authentic and representative illustration of the state of human relations in today's community. I like the review from parable.com, as it accentuates most of my thoughts about this book: "Normal? Who’s Normal? Not you, that’s for sure! No one you’ve ever met, either. None of us are normal according to God’s definition, and the closer we get to each other, the plainer that becomes. Yet for all our quirks, sins, and jagged edges, we need each other. Community is more than just a word—it is one of our most fundamental requirements. So how do flawed, abnormal people such as ourselves master the forces that can drive us apart and come together in the life-changing relationships God designed us for?"....."The need for community is woven into the very fabric of our being. Nothing else can substitute for the life-giving benefits of connecting with others—not even God. H...

Fool's Gold ? - Discerning Truth in an Age of Error

Image
Rating: ★★★★ Category: Books Genre: Religion & Spirituality Author: John MacArthur The premise of this book is that in today's prevailing cultural push towards a theologically liberal attitude of accepting societal norms of right and wrong, good and bad, therein lies the danger of spiritual comprise by way of forsaking biblical truth in favour of pragmatic sanctification or numerical success. Through this book, John MacArthur strives to plead a cause for the need of biblical discernment with regard to an avalanche of new whimsical beliefs, watered-down doctrine, as well as an emphasis of adherence to human tradition. What is notably relevant to the local church context, as covered in this book, are 1) its objective examination of the content presented in the worldwide best-seller, The Purpose-Driven Life, highlighting the problematic approach of the seeker-sensitive movement, that emphasizes the fulfilment of needs over the utmost need for redemption of each person through repe...

Overcoming the Dark Side of Leadership: The Paradox of Personal Dysfunction

Image
Rating: ★★★★ Category: Books Genre: Religion & Spirituality Author: Gary L. McIntosh and Samuel D. Rima, Sr This is an apt book that arose amid an alarming trend of leadership failures, notably within the worldwide body of Christ. The presiding assumptions in the development of this book, in summary among these: 1. Every leader suffers from some degree of personal dysfunction. 2. Personal dysfunction, in some form or other, can often serve to drive the individual in desiring to succeed in leadership. 3. Many leaders are not aware of the dark side of their personalities and the personal dysfunctions that drive them. 4. The personal characteristics that drive individuals to succeed and lead often have a shadow side that can cripple them once they become leaders and very often causes significant failure - this is called the "paradox of personal dysfunction in leadership". ..6. Scripture addresses the dark side of human personality and the motivations that drive us to a...

A word to live by

A word to live by, as exhorted by the apostle Paul to the church in Corinth, in his first epistle, the fourth chapter, from the first to the fifth verse, according to the New King James Version of the Holy Bible: "Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by a human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. For I know of nothing against myself, yet I am not justified by this; but He who judges me is the Lord. Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one’s praise will come from God." It is such a subtle thing, the way a person is regarded in society, by his or her outward form or appearance, whether accentuated by word or by deed.  However, it is in the underlying pattern...
