The premise of this book is that in today's prevailing cultural push towards a theologically liberal attitude of accepting societal norms of right and wrong, good and bad, therein lies the danger of spiritual comprise by way of forsaking biblical truth in favour of pragmatic sanctification or numerical success.
Through this book, John MacArthur strives to plead a cause for the need of biblical discernment with regard to an avalanche of new whimsical beliefs, watered-down doctrine, as well as an emphasis of adherence to human tradition.
What is notably relevant to the local church context, as covered in this book, are 1) its objective examination of the content presented in the worldwide best-seller, The Purpose-Driven Life, highlighting the problematic approach of the seeker-sensitive movement, that emphasizes the fulfilment of needs over the utmost need for redemption of each person through repentance of sin before Christ. 2) its serious critique of the over-confidence given to altar calls with regard to evangelising unbelievers, as well as the undesirable effect of impacting all participating witnesses of such altar calls, in holding to the view of having been edified of the presence of the Holy Spirit and of His evidential work by virtue of the scale of response during the altar call.
