The Good Shepherd

Among the recent films that caught my attention on HBO recently...

An excellent film set in the early tumultuous years of the Cold War, but with numerous flashbacks to the treacherous days before World War 2 as well, revolving around the protagonist played by Matt Damon - the supposed pioneering father of the counter-intelligence family within the Central Intelligence Agency from its inception.

The story delves deep into the dark intrigues that meander through the lives of individuals who have to bear the burden of state security to the point of being consumed by their profession, resulting in severe damage to their personal lives and moral character and standing in society.

In retrospect, I find within myself a kindred spirit that echoes loudly against what I have learned about the character portrayed by the protagonist - a stubbornly closed person, intensely principled in his profession without remorse; and at the same time living a life of agonising regret of forlorn bliss from the days of youth.
